This is my all-time favorite protein shake. If it were true that “you are what you eat,” I would definitely be a mocha frappe protein shake. I have at least two of these a day. Sometimes four. Don’t judge. I’m even drinking one now as I write. It’s delicious! And it’s such a simple shake: chocolate protein powder and good instant coffee.

I buy these Starbucks Via packets by the 50-pack. (And like my peanut butter protein cookies, they look really cute in a jar.) I know what you’re thinking, “Decaf? How crazy!” No worries, you can also get the regular and bold flavors from the same link.


I should mention here, too, that you should use your favorite chocolate protein powder. I prefer vegan powders over whey for my shakes, but I realize that not everyone will feel the same way. You can certainly substitute whey or casein. If you do choose a vegan powder, though, I would stick with the Sun Warrior Classic Protein in Chocolate. I have found it to be the smoothest and best tasting, especially as compared to other raw vegan powders.

And you can certainly make it with any kind of milk, if you prefer. I do that on occasion (I use cashew or almond milk), but I’m perfectly happy with keeping it simple with filtered water.

  1. Put ice and water in blender.
  2. Add Via packet.
  3. Add protein powder.
  4. Blend and enjoy!
A note about substitutions: you may, of course, substitute any brand of instant coffee. One teaspoon, or to taste.
